Data exchangeCoupling Operator Interface to ABB AC 800 C/M

MMS (Manufacturing Message Specification) is a ISO 9506 standard protocol, for applications originally from General Motors, which implies that all communication handling will be the same, regardless of network type and connected network devices. The protocol defines communication messages transferred between controllers as well as between the engineering station (like the Control Builder) and the controller (e.g. downloading an application or reading/writing variables). It is specially made for industrial applications.

Provided Services

The MMS protocol can provide different services within a network, e.g.:

Download an application, e.g. executable code and data from an engineering station (like the Control Builder) to a controller.
Create, delete, start, and stop programs over a network.
Read and write variables located in other systems on a network.
Obtain information about executing applications and error conditions in remote systems.
Read and write files over a network.
Handle alarm conditions.
Obtain information about capabilities of remote systems, identify model and revision of remote systems.
The advantages with the MMS protocol are mainly:
It is an ISO 9506 standard protocol which implies that all communication handling will be the same, regardless of network type and connected network devices.
It can be used on many different networks, preferably on the TCP/IP network which is the most common used network today.
