Contains notes and information on the installation and configuration of the VNC server on the host PC.

6.4.1 VNC Communication:

Virtual Network Computing (VNC for short) is a software that displays the screen content of a remote computer (PC) (server) on a local computer (Thin Client)

Keyboard and mouse actions on the local computer (Thin Client) are sent to the remote computer (PC). This software enables users to work on a remote computer as if they were sitting right in front of it.

The condition for the remote control of a PC is that you instal a VNC server on the PC that is to be controlled remotely.

Such a VNC server (freeware) can, for example, be downloaded from the following website: http://www.realvnc.com/.

We cannot give you detailed instructions for the installation of the VNC server and its configuration, so if you have any questions, please contact the actual software manufacturer.

Below is the example of the RealVNC server from the website mentioned above:

Depending on the version, the VNC servers have different functionalities.

For more information and a description of the VNC server of individual manufacturers, please refer to the manufacturer's documentation.

The following description of VNC communication is limited to the information / settings required to establish communication.

The installation and configuration of the VNC server requires administrator access authority at the PC where the VNC server is to be used. The subsequent VNC communication does not require this level of access authority.

After the VNC server has been installed and configured, it must be activated at the PC that is to be controlled remotely.

The VNC server mentioned above indicates this with a VNC server icon in the task bar.

Windows XP VNC or Win7 RealVNCIconWin7

If you move the mouse across this icon, you will see the IP address (here: IP 192.168.1.23) referring to this VNC server and originating from the PC to be controlled and where the VNC server has been installed. The VNC server gets this IP address from the settings of the PC's network conneciton. It is of no consequence here whether the IP address was specified manually or allocated by the DHCP server.

Please note that this IP address has been specified as server IP in the address book entry for the (VNC connection ⇩).

6.4.2 VNC Server-parameter:

Because there is such a great variety of VNC server applications, we can only give a general overview of the configuration of the VNC server. We base this on the RealVNC server application.

VNC server address:

Usually, the various servers offer one or more options of identifying the address under which they can be contacted in the network.

Below is an example using the RealVNC server

In WinXP or RealVNC-Server-IPWin7 in Win7

The target address of the Host PC must be located in the same network as that of the Thin Client or must be contactable from there.

Ports:

Accept connections on port

Defines a specific port on the server connection for data transfer. Usually this is Port 5900. If network conflicts or other reasons cause you to use a different port, you need to explicitly call this up in the (Configuration ⇩).

Serve Java viewer on port

For Web browser connection. Not applicable here.

VNC Password:

The various VNC server applications all use passwords to authenticate someone requesting a VNC connection. The passwords can have different origins.

None

This password option defines no password. The VNC server on the Host PC permits every Remote PC (Thin Client) requesting a VNC connection via its address access to the system.

VNC Password

This password option defines one or, depending on the VNC server application, several passwords via which the VNC server of the Host PC requests authentication from the Remote PC.

Windows Password

This option uses Window's own access authentication. With this, the VNC server of the Host PC permits the Remote PC access to the Host PC according to the access criteria defined by the VNC server.

Single sign on

This option uses Window's own access authentication as well as an additional authentication via a Windows-based log-in. With this, the VNC server of the Host PC permits the Remote PC access to the Host PC according to the access criteria defined by the VNC server, provided the user has authenticated himself or herself with a Windows log-in valid for the Host PC.

Encryption:

Most VNC servers use certain process for the transfer of image, mouse and keyboard data to protect these from unauthorised access.

Always on

Determines that data is always encrypted.

Prefer on

Determines that data is always encrypted unless the Thin Client requests no encryption. This is necessary when the (Configuration ⇩) requests no encryption as a standard.

Prefer off

Determines that data is never encrypted unless the Thin Client requests encryption. This is necessary when the Configuration requests encryption.

Prompt local user to accept connections

Server-specific option allowing the user of the Host PC to acknowledge or refuse a connection request. This and other options are probably less relevant to typical applications, as usually the Host PC is used for direct Remote access.

Start VNC Server automatically with windows

Option determining that the service of the VNC server is activated automatically when Windows is started. This option should usually be selected, as otherwise the Remote access function (of the VNC servers) would have to be started explicitly after a Host PC system start.

Configuration

6.4.3 VNC Connection set-up:

If the administrator has set up a VNC connection, this can be activated or deactivated in the "RemoteHMI menu" (press F8) with a button.

Adressbuch

The way this connection is established depends on the settings of the VNC server and can either be effected by

•a direct connection without asking for a password

•a connection with VNC password

•a connection with Windows password

6.4.4 Connection status:

A set up connection can have 4 different connection statuses.

	Indicates that the connection could not be established via the Ethernet
	Indicates that the connection server has been recognised
	Indicates that a connection to the server has been established and is shown in the Thin Client
	Indicates that a connection to the server has been established and is currently NOT shown in the Thin Client
