Principle of a CAN bus system:

All participants are aligned in a chain (daisy chain). The first and last participant are terminated by a resistor (120 Ohm).

Spur lines or star networks are permitted, but special attention must be paid to the characteristic impedance.

Mismatches may lead to reflections at the wire ends of each bus wire, which in turn may result in higher error rates during data transmission.
